James Fenimore Cooper was een Amerikaans schrijver en criticus die The Last of the Mohicans (1826) schreef.

Cooper schreef in de 18e eeuw over de Amerikaans 'Frontier' op een geromantiseerde manier, waarbij hij sympathiseerde met de benarde positie van de inheemse volken (de indianen). De 'White man' Natty 'Hawkeye' Bumppo, bijgenaamd 'The Long Rifle', belichaamt de heroïsche frontiersman die de kloof die hem scheidt van de 'Red Man' weet te overbruggen met kameraadschap en vriendschap. Bumppo is de held van Coopers "Leatherstocking Tales" serie:

James Cooper werd geboren op 15 september 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey, als elfde kind van Elizabeth Fenimore (1752-1817) en congreslid, rechter en oprichter van Cooperstown, William Cooper (1754-1809). Een jaar nadat James werd geboren verhuisde het gezin naar de oevers van Otsego Lake in Otsego County, waar William de eerste woning bouwde en Cooperstown oprichtte.

Cooper studeerde vanaf 1803 aan Yale College in New Haven, Connecticut, maar werd daar een paar jaar later buitengezet. Vervolgens werkte hij als matroos op een vrachtschip en maakte reizen naar verre oorden zoals de Straat van Gibraltar. In 1808 trad hij toe tot de United States Navy als adelborst en het was op zee dat hij zichzelf als schrijver begon te zien. Na de dood van zijn vader nam hij ontslag uit de marine en begon een boerderij.

Op 1 januari 1811, in Mamaroneck (staat New York) trouwde Cooper met Susan Augusta Delancey (1792-1852) met wie hij zeven kinderen had: zijn dochters Elizabeth (1811-1813), Susan (1813-1894), Caroline (1815-1892) Anne (1817-1885) en Maria (1819-1898), en zijn zonen Fenimore (1821-1823) en Paul (1824-1895). Na een tijdje in New Rochelle (New York State) te hebben gewoond, verhuisden de Coopers naar Scarsdale in New York, waar James een huis bouwde. Cooper bracht al snel veel tijd door in New York City, waar hij in 1822 de Bread and Cheese Club oprichtte.

In 1826, hetzelfde jaar dat hij Fenimore wettelijk toevoegde aan zijn naam, verhuisde het gezin naar Europa. Cooper bekleedde het ambt van consul van de Verenigde Staten in de Franse stad Lyon. Hij begon ook veel te reizen naar andere landen, waaronder Italië, Zwitserland, Engeland en Nederland. In 1833 keerden de Coopers terug naar de Verenigde Staten, naar de nederzetting in Cooperstown. Cooper bleef wel naar New York, Philadelphia en Baltimore reizen. In die periode publiceerde hij ook History of the Navy of the United States of America (1839), The Lives of Distinguished Naval Officers (1846), en The Towns of Manhattan (1851).

James Fenimore Cooper overleed op 14 september 1851 in Cooperstown in New York. Hij ligt begraven in het familiegraf in Christ Episcopal Churchyard in Cooperstown. Zijn vrouw Susan overleefde hem slechts een paar maanden, en werd naast hem begraven.
